During the week of June 6-12, Hawaii Island police arrested 20 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant.

During the week of June 6-12, Hawaii Island police arrested 20 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant.

Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 11; South Hilo, four; South Kohala, two; Hamakua, Puna and North Kohala, one each.

So far this year, there have been 504 DUI arrests compared to 456 during the same period last year, an increase of 10.5 percent.

There have been 650 major accidents so far this year compared to 682 during the same period last year, a decrease of 4.7 percent.

So far this year, there have been nine fatal crashes on Hawaii Island, one with multiple deaths, resulting in 10 official fatalities, compared with eight fatal crashes, two with multiple deaths, resulting in 11 official fatalities during the same period last year.

This represents an increase of 12.5 percent for fatal crashes and a decrease of 9.1 percent for fatalities.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
